Need a Good Business Name? Get Free Help!
Are you starting the next big thing? Are you looking for a name that will grab people and put your competition to shame? Do you want people to say, “hey that’s a cool name …I wish I would have thought of that!”
Before You Start:
Well the first thing you need to do of course is decide what you stand for, and the image you want to portray. Try to think about your audience and how they will perceive you. If you want to portray the budget/low-price discounter image, you would pick a totally different style of name from the guy who is selling based on social-status and high-quality. For instance, two guys are selling shoes…One names his store “Shoe Cents” and the other name’s his “Braeden & Son’s Shoe Gallery.” Who is selling based on price, and who is selling based on status? But wait, theres another guy around the corner that opened “Two-Million Pairs.” He is selling based on selection! Everyone selling shoes, but targeting different people.
Those are bad examples of good names but that leads me to the real issue: Finding the perfect name. You and your partner sit down and have a brainstorming session trying to figure out what to name your new restaurant. Yo both have ideas, but wouldn’t you like to get thoughtful input and ideas from huge group of people? Better yet, wouldn’t you like a group of people who think about naming all the time? Creative types who can think outside the you-know-what? It’s easy to get that group on your side…for free.
Tap Into the Think-Tank
The answer is found in the Wordboard. It’s a message board created by the Igor International Naming and Branding Agency. Igor has doe work for big-name companies such as Bank of America and Nike. Basically, you can go to the message board, log in, and post your dilemma in whatever category you fall in. From there. A group of creative types will throw a bunch of names at you absolutely free, just because they like you.
Posting Tips
They key to getting the most out of it is describing what you do, who you target and what you will stand for. Give details. Also, it’s not a bad idea to give them a few words/themes/examples to work with. In a few days to a week, you will get responses from naming veterans who really just like to come up with cool names. Talk about fresh perspectives… Everyone has their own naming style. Some are funky, some are tame, and some you will just have to be open-minded.
Another secret is: Don’t just post and disappear. The more you go back and give feedback, the more often your project will be pushed to the top of the board… And then more naming gurus will see it and give their two-cents, or even three.
